Epiphany of the Lord
We take down Christmas decorations and enjoy a treat on the day of His revelation to the world - My New Year's Resolution
Be in good health and joyful in the new year! I hope to see you out there exercising. It’s the number one thing we can do for our health. Move more, lift things! Here’s my health guru Peter Attia, MD on the topic: Peter Attia, MD on the Importance of Exercise
January 6th is the Feast of the Epiphany when the Magi visited the Christ Child. It is the day when children in the Spanish-speaking world traditionally get presents from the Three Kings (Reyes Magos or The Magi as we know them).
Jone, my wife, helps us celebrate the feast with her family’s Epiphany honey twist (rosca de reyes) which is supposed to have baked in it a gold coin*. She made do with a well-washed quarter in place of the gold coin. I did not find the lucky coin but did enjoy the honey twist tremendously. The caramelized honey topping is exquisite!
I had it with a mug of one of my favorite coffees. Fittingly for the date, it is the Paradiso Blend from Mystic Monk Coffee (Link to Paradiso Blend at Mystic Monk Coffee). The beans come from Central and South America. Children there are at this moment checking out their shoes for presents and even having a little coffee in their milk!
I take my coffee black because I’m drawn to the intensity of the flavor and its interplay with the sweetness of the foods that accompany it. It also saves calories. My serving of rosca de reyes weighed 40 grams or 1.43 ounces. According to MyFitnessPal the calorie count is 127. I had the honey twist in addition my usual full breakfast so I’ll need to do a couple of extra turns around the block to make up for it. I’ll be sure to do it ahead of the snow forecast for tonight.
On the Feast of the Epiphany we are also putting away our Christmas decorations. First we say goodbye to the nativity scene (lovepop's Advent Calendar / Nativity Scene Is Genius).
Then goodbye to the Christmas lights for the windows.
New Year’s Resolution
In 2024 I resolve to focus even more on building habits of connection, exercise and healthy eating. I invite you to join me in this effort by subscribing and sharing this post.
*The actual tradition is to bake into the rosca de reyes an image of the Infant Jesus. The gold coin was a substitute for that.
